What is Microsoft 365 and is it the same as Office 365?
Microsoft 365 is a new branding that Microsoft has come up with to increase the functionality of the Office 365 package. It does not only come with Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) but it now comes with so much more applications such as Teams, OneDrive, SharePoint, Email etc. When I say the package comes with Teams, OneDrive and SharePoint, I'm referring to the storage and functionality as there are few differences when we compare the free version of those applications with the subscribed version. What does Microsoft 365 get to do with Cloud? (you must be wondering)In Cloud, we have 3 popular concepts which are:
- IAAS (Infrastructure As A Service)
- PAAS (Platform As A Service)
- SAAS (Software As A Service)
Since Microsoft 365 suite is hosted at Microsoft Cloud, it falls under the SAAS category.
One of the criteria for SAAS is we don’t have to install the application on the server (be it on-premise or on Cloud) to utilize the application.
Take Microsoft SharePoint (available as part of Microsoft 365 Basic) as an example. Traditional Microsoft SharePoint requires us to install and configure the SharePoint software in a dedicated server to use it.
However, if we subscribe to Microsoft 365, we can straight away use Microsoft SharePoint after a successful subscription to the service.
